What is the J1?

The J1 Summer Work Travel program is an official US State Department cultural exchange (BridgeUSA), running since 1961 under federal regulations 22 CFR Part 62 — and in Ireland it's practically a rite of passage: thousands of Irish students head to the States every summer, with over 3,500 taking part last year. You work a seasonal job for 8–12 weeks (up to 4 months on the visa), then get a 30-day grace period to travel. Every application goes through a State Department–designated sponsor, which issues your DS-2019 and supports you stateside. The big modern rule: since 2016, applicants from Ireland must have a job arranged BEFORE the visa — either placed by your provider or found yourself and vetted by the sponsor.
