Yes — since 2016, applicants from Ireland must show a pre-arranged, sponsor-vetted job. Providers place you via job hubs and the January hiring fairs in Dublin, or you can find your own job and have the sponsor approve it (usually ~€200 cheaper).

They're different programs: the summer J1 (SWT) is for current students; the 12-month Graduate Visa (J-1 Intern/Trainee) is for graduates within 12 months of finishing, must be related to your field, and — unlike the summer J1 — doesn't require a pre-placed job (you get ~90 days after arrival to find one). No. Only the consular officer decides. Reputable providers publish what happens to your money on a refusal — after 2020, checking refund and provider-failure terms in writing is non-negotiable.

Typical wages are $12–16 per hour plus tips in hospitality, at 32+ hours a week — many students work extra shifts or a second job. Most cover their costs during the season; bring ~$800 in support funds for the start.

That's half the point — the Irish J1 is a group tradition. Providers routinely place friend groups in the same town, and staff housing with other Irish students is the norm in the classic spots.
