Is this program real and legal?
Yes — Summer Work Travel is run by the US State Department under federal regulations (22 CFR 62.32) since 1961. Jamaica is the #1 sending country in the world with over 8,700 participants a year.
What is the TWSP / MLSS rule?
Since January 1, 2025, under the Temporary Worker Security Program, the US Embassy in Kingston only accepts applications that come through recruiters registered with the Ministry of Labour and Social Security. If your recruiter isn't on the MLSS list, your application is refused — check before you pay.
What if my visa is denied — do I lose my money?
MLSS rules require registered agencies to refund the bulk of your fees on a visa denial. Get the exact percentage and conditions in writing before paying. Government fees (SEVIS, MRV) are non-refundable regardless.
I can't swim — can I still do the lifeguard program?
Often yes: the lifeguard track is Jamaica's signature program, with American Red Cross certification arranged before departure, and several agencies offer swimming lessons for beginners. Ask early — those contracts fill first.
How much can I earn?
Typical wages are US$12–18 per hour at 32+ hours per week, and many students take a second job. Most participants cover their program costs during the season. Budget for the required ~US$1,500 landing money.
Can I apply without a local agency?
Yes — applying directly through a US State Department–designated sponsor is allowed and sometimes cheaper than the local-agency route. What matters is that whoever recruits you in Jamaica is MLSS-registered.
